One of the best things about reviewing albums is getting to listen to an unknown band that has somehow slipped through the cracks. I definitely listen to my share of bands that get an A+ for effort but they just don’t have that “X” factor that makes a band go from good to great. End of Empires is definitely one of the bands that at least to this point in time, has slipped through the cracks.
End of Empires is a six-piece hardcore/metal band out of Denver, Colorado. All I got to say about this band is that they are “FRIGGIN’ BRUTAL”!!! In addition to being brutal, End of Empires also has something going for them that not a lot of bands can claim, their own sound. They have their own sound because they masterfully mix some death metal screams, clean vocals, and keyboards with your traditional hardcore sound. Many bands try this but many fail. I would also like to mention that their vocalist Atma is definitely not someone I would like to see in the pit with me. This guy could clear a pit with just a stare. He has the perfect look for any hardcore/metal band front man.
Musically, End of Empires show off their prowess with some powerful breakdowns and some well timed riffs. I caught myself replaying songs on Screams for the Voiceless many times while trying to listen to the whole album. I will repeat a line from above and say that the breakdowns on this album are “FRIGGIN’ Brutal”!!! I doubt you will find many bystanders in the crowd standing with their arms crossed when End of Empires takes the stage.
Vocally, Atma’s pipes are second to none. In addition, the positive and uplifting lyrics are quite refreshing. Hearing about how bad everything is or how crappy someone’s parents are gets really old after a while. End of Empires truly shows their maturity and song writing genius by writing songs about fulfilling our dreams, families that have lost loved ones, and people fighting for a better tomorrow. These songs have passion oozing from them and passion in hardcore music makes for some insane breakdowns! I would say that the only thing I didn’t really like about this album was that there was a little too many clean vocals for my liking; however, after understanding what the songs are about I can see why they are in there. I would prefer to hear Atma show off the pipes some more, and hear some of Tyson’s awesome death metal growls instead of the clean vocals.
From start to finish Screams for the Voiceless is built to please. This album is full of brutal breakdowns and great throaty growls sure to please every hardcore/metal fan. Do yourself a favor, go check out the End of Empires music, and buy some of it.
