A Hole Inside is a young four-piece post-hardcore band out of Sweden. This is one of the hardest reviews I have had to write. What makes it hard is that Steps We Have to Follow is not an earth shattering EP; however, there were a few bright spots on the EP that I really liked and made me think, “with a some more hard work these guys may just have something.”
Instrumentally, there is nothing to complain about on this EP. A Hole Inside is definitely not lacking in the musician category. This EP is filled with some great riffs and good breakdowns. Vocally, is where I believe A Hole Inside could improve. The clean vocals and the raw screams are a little unpolished and need some work.
The best song on Steps We Have to Follow is “Failed.” This song is really makes me feel like A Hole Inside is on to something. This song is dripping with raw, unbridled emotion. The clean vocals are good, but the raw screams are really good. However, at times they seem a little forced. “Failed” is also by far the heaviest song on the EP as well. I would like to see them stay more aggressive in their songs as opposed to some of the softer stuff that is on Steps We Have to Follow. Marcus has some great raw pipes that once polished are really going to blow the Swedish underground away.
All in all, this EP is solid debut for a young band. Steps We Have to Follow is more of an audition and sneak peek into what could be a very good post hardcore/screamo band in the months and years ahead
