Interview with Guitarist Justin Ruesch of D-Railed on 12/1/09
How did you come up with the name D-Railed?
Well our personal lives are always off track so the name just kind of fit. One of us said it one time and everybody went hey, that’s a great band name, lol.
How did you guys meet and how long have you guys been playing together?
Me and Tim met about ten years ago because we married sisters and I joined this band in may of 2005 and Brian and Paul came in from another band in the stl area about four months into this thing when we lost a couple members. Dan is the new guy, he just replaced our second bass player a few months ago but we played with him a little last year so he’s been around for a while.
Have you guys played in any other bands?
We have all played in other bands. Too many to list… lol.
When can we expect a D-Railed record to hit the street?
I would love to answer that for you but we don’t know. As far as buying our stuff goes though we will be available digitally by the New Year.
Who are your musical influences?
Slayer is my favorite band ever. I also like Pantera and Dime was the shit of course. Dave Mustaine and James Hetfield too I guess.
What inspires your music?
More often than not our songs come out of free jams for the basic ideas and than we talk about it and do a rough draft and than take it apart and do it again. As far as the lyrics Tim usually tries to write about something relevant. Societies woes and whatnots, lol.
Who have you guys toured with?
We have played with several bigger acts but we have always hit the road by ourselves thus far. Hoping to change that after the New Year too. We’re working on it now.
Your MySpace page states that you guys are gearing up for a major US Tour, Can you give us any hints on when it might be and who might be playing with you guys?
That would be telling and then you would have to die. Seriously though yeah, we are working on something right now but cant get into details in case it doesn’t happen I don’t want to look stupid, lol.
What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you guys on stage?
One of the on stage monitors blew out one time and it scared the shit out of me. I almost jumped right off the stage and I was the only one who stopped playing too so that sucked.
What is the craziest thing you have seen a fan or fans do while you were playing?
I had to ask Tim this question and he said “one time he saw these two chicks with their shirts up licking each other tits and smiling at him” .I cant see shit from the stage so I don’t know.
What is the best show you have had?
Between opening for the Metallica tribute band Battery and opening for Static X both shows the crowds were huge and fucking pumped up so it’s a toss up.
What do you guys do to get pumped up before you play?
Chant and hold circle jerks before we have our big group cry. I just drink honestly.
What can fans that haven’t seen you live expect to see/experience at your shows?
You know that’s a hard question to answer because we don’t do anything super fancy or anything. We catch a lot of people off guard because we don’t have big I’m a rockstar egos so I think people relate to us well and it feels more like a giant party with your friends.
What do you guys do when you are not touring?
Argue, lol, uhm… we all kind of do our own thing and keep some distance until its time to go to work. We learned a long time ago that over exposure to each other is a bad thing. I personally spend a lot of time with my daughter and as far as free time goes you can usually find me at abuddies house chilling or at the casino, lol.
If you weren’t playing music what would you guys be doing?
Nothing. We would cease to exist.
Where does D-Railed see itself in the next 5 years?
Household name baby.
Everyone has at least one album in their CD/mp3 collection that they would never ever want anyone to know about. Care to tell us yours? Want to snitch on anyone else in D-Railed?
A lot of people are surprised to find Sarah Mclaughlin and sir mix a lot in mine. The other guys I’m not sure of. Paul’s into some really weird shit musically but ha calls it research, lol. Tim is a huge eighties fan and some of that I think is pretty embarrassing. He doesn’t seem to think so though
If you could have one mega-show what bands would you play with?
Not sure. A lot of the greats are gone. Slayer for sure. I love Machine Head too. I know some of the guys would definitely say Faith no more.
What are your top 5 albums of all time?
1. Slayer-seasons in the abyss
2. Pantera-vulgar display of power
3. Megadeth-countdown to extinction
4. AC/DC-back in black
5. Metallica-master of puppets
Here is my open-ended question, what makes D-Railed special or unique? This is not intended to be what makes you better but what do you guys bring to a show that you believe is unique or special to D-Railed?
Well like I said earlier we don’t have the rock star egos going on so I think that were a lot more approachable than a lot of other bands. Basically we are just your normal everyday blue-collar guys and if you met any of us in a real life situation than you would have no idea that we can rock like we do. It’s a hard question to answer because we just kind of do our thing you know? People usually always come back and see us again because they had such a good time so I guess we are a true party band and on top of that we play some kick ass original music too. Come on down and check it out for yourself and you can tell me, lol. Thanks Steve keep rockin.
