Interview with vocalist Bruce Fitzhugh of Living Sacrifice on 12/16/09
I would say that “The Infinite Order” is probably the most anticipated release in Christian Metal history, so what kind of feelings, emotions, pressure, etc… are you guys feeling? I would say from what I have heard from Overkill Exposure and Rules of Engagement you guys have more than stepped up to the plate.
Hey Steve, thanks so much man. I think that we are just really excited about the new material. There has probably never been a record that we have done where I wanted to play every song live. But that would be hard since our catalog is 7 records deep now.
Which one of you brought up the idea of coming out of retirement? Was there any hesitation from any of you guys?
It was my idea. Everyone else had stuff going on already so it was just a matter of us being able to devote the right amount of time to it. No hesitations.
I saw you guys play this summer in MN at the Sonshine Festival and noticed that every band there was behind the state with their eyes locked on you, including As I Lay Dying and War of Ages. What does it feel like to have that much respect/influence in your genre?
Ha-ha, are you sure they were not thinking to themselves “look at the old dudes” hahaha. No it is nice to see that what we have done over these several years has been respected and that we were even considered “influential.”
So what was the reason you guys wanted to come out of retirement?
We really felt like we had the time to devote to it now and that it would not be a burden. We never want to do things out of pressure. That takes the fun out of if. And I would say that fans contacting us to let us know how much we meant to them and how the music impacted Their lives have been really amazing.
What were you guys doing during retirement?
Well I started a merch company called Zambooie.com; Lance played and wrote music with various people. He got a song on the Punisher Movie soundtrack with Ben Moody. Um, Rocky played drums for Evanescence and Arthur started his own merchandising company, Bandwagon Merch (bandwagonmerch.com).
I know you may not know at this point but does your comeback encompass just “The Infinite Order” or do you envision some more albums?
We will be doing more records for sure.
What inspires your music?
Other music, our families, life, and God.
Who are some of the bands that you listen to now?
I listen to the same old stuff that I grew up on. I have been listening to the new Megadeth record which I love and I really like Thrice’s new one.
Are you guys planning a national tour to promote “The Infinite Order”?
We will be touring all of February 2010 with War of Ages, Shai Hulud, Lionheart, and The Great Commission.
What was it like playing on the Huntour with The Crucified, Focused, and Demon Hunter?
Huntour was killer, but the Crucified had to cancel, which bummed me out really bad.
What is the craziest pit you guys have caused?
Cornerstone pit had traditionally been the best. But our fans are older now, so they are more careful, I think. That happens when you have to pay for your own health insurance. Ha.
What has been your favorite show you have done and what made it your favorite?
There has been a lot, but I would say Cornerstone 2000 when we open for POD on main stage. People still come up to me to this day and tell me what an amazing show that was.
Has anything embarrassing ever happened to you guys on stage?
Oh yeah! Last year on Huntour, on the very first riff of the first song, I stepped up on the monitor to “rock out” and I almost fell off the stage into the barricade. Instead I leaned back to catch myself and landed on my butt. It sucked. I just had to laugh.
Are there any songs from your past albums that you would like to do at a show that aren’t in your current rotation? (I would love to see you guys do The Poisoning)
I would like to work up Ignite off Conceived in Fire, and Liar off Reborn. Not sure if we can though.
What is your favorite album you have made?
Right now? The Infinite Order.
