Interview with Creations on 12/13/2009
So how did you come up with the band name Creations?
JT: The name really represents how depraved and in need of Grace we are. God created us in His image, but because of our own sin humanity turned away from Him. We have rebelled against Him and gone our own way. God sent His Son to earth, and we murdered Him. This is why the cross is such good news; we are totally sinful, wicked and depraved, and while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Creator laid His life down for Creation.
How long have you played together and how did you guys meet?
JT: We’ve been playing together for about a year now. Jonny and me met through old bands, and we met Michael through the bible college at Jonny’s local church. Honestly, we had all been in bands for years and were sick of it. Jesus had changed our hearts, and we had a real passion for truth and just wanted to share the Gospel with kids. We all loved heavy music, so we thought that would be the best medium.
What kind of feedback have you received so far from your current EP Ruined?
JT: We have received a lot of love. It’s been really encouraging reading stories of kids who have been touched by Jesus through our music.
Who have you toured with so far and what are your touring plans for the near future?
JT: We are doing a US tour in January with a couple of other bands and we are planning an Australian tour in February.
What has been your favorite show so far?
JT: Actually our first show with For Today and Saving Grace is probably my favorite. Some of the best shows we have played have been to a room of 20 kids who hate our message, who are heckling and throwing stuff at us. Being able to see how God works in a situation like that is incredible.
What is the craziest pit you have seen and/or caused?
JT: Probably at the Sydney For Today show.
What do you do when you are not touring?
JT: We love to hang out and eat Mexican food.
What would you be doing if you were not playing music?
JT: I would be at Bible College. We all really want to plant a church one day, so I guess we would be working on that.
What bands have influenced your music and sound?
The Acacia Strain, Impending Doom, Whitechapel, For Today, Sleeping Giant, No Innocent Victim. We also love a lot of worship and folky music.
What is the worst thing that has happened to you guys on tour?
JB: Me and Michael flying economy from Sydney to LA with sucky movies, while James flew First Class.
What is the difference between Australian and U.S. shows?
MB: Australian shows are a lot bigger; But US shows are smaller and a lot more intense.
What bands are you currently listening to?
JT: Life in your Way, For Today, Misery Signals, Converge, City and Colour, The Middle East, The Acacia Strain, Impending Doom, Brand New, Your Demise, Hundredth, The Avett Brothers, The Great Commission, So we listen to just about anything. Although we play heavy music and love writing that type of music we tend to listen to lots of laid back folk and indie bands. It helps us relax.
So why should a hardcore fan buy your album? What do feel makes Creations different from the rest of the genre?
JT: It’s super energetic with a clear message, heavy breakdowns and full of passion. All of which encompasses what a hardcore band should be. What makes us stand out in this genre is the diversity between each song from melodic riffs to noise chords and energetic punk beats, never straying from our tough yet crucial message of the cross.
What do fans do to get you guys pumped up while you are playing?
JT: Screaming along the lyrics, dancing/moshing, and the occasional act of violence (just kidding). Along with worshiping our lord and savior Jesus Christ.
Has anything embarrassing happened to you guys on stage?
MB: My fake front two teeth came out on stage once.
JT: My wireless cut out at our last show for almost half the song.
JB: My Strap broke off before a breakdown once, but that’s about it. James also sidekicks me on stage.
