04.27.09 Interviews | by: Linn Bergström

Sofie and Linn met Grant Brandell, who plays bass in the band Underoath, before their gig in Gothenburg, April 23.

- How long have you played together?
Since 1991. But I have played in the band since 2001/2002.

- Where did you get the name Underoath from?
It was our former singer Dallas who came on the name. It means nothing more than what it does in English.

Avosetta – Self-titled Demo

Label: Unsigned

Best Song: Everyday Heroes
Score: 9/10

Generally not known for its post-hardcore scene, Norwich is the birth place of Avosetta. So, when you bring 5 guys together who love what they do and are exceptionally talented at it, you have to expect the results to be superb; and they most certainly are! Acclaimed to have live shows that rival those at the top, and with a fan base that’s ever growing, there’s nothing to stop these guys.

The Red Baron – My First Love

I’ve read around some reviews from nameless sites that say The Red Baron’s sound is not original, they try too hard, or that theyre too young to write music. Grow up. Hailing From Fort Lauderdale, Florida, The Red Baron brings the hardcore some people in that area are not used to. I happened to catch The Red Baron with Call To Preserve and Venia a few weeks ago… what a show. The Red Baron was the last band to play, and though everyone was tired from dancing in the pit to everyone else, we still showed our love for The Red Baron. Gotta love that old style hardcore. ;]

Killing California – Goin’ South

Best Song: Dagger Practice

Just reading the bands name and title, you know this has to be Punk or at least a sub genre. The artwork is also amazing, it completely proves the album was made to skank to, circle pit, and break something! With a sound that could be mistaken for Rockabilly, Psychobilly, or even Horror Rock, Killing California is quickly becoming one of my new favorite bands. Ever heard Calabrese, The Blue Suede Bombers, or Mad Sin?

The Insurgence – Never Surrender EP

Best Song: Never Surrender

When I picked up the cd and read the title that was neatly drawn onto a burned cd-r, it read, Never Surrender by The Insurgence. “With that title, I hope it lives up to it’s name” I thought to myself. I was not disappointed. I listen to music of all genres, and this was some great Punk Rock blasting from my stereo. With a strong upbeat tempo, wailing guitars, a strong drummer, a bassist who loves to slap his strings, and a vocalist that isn’t afraid to push his limits.

Wow, what amazing artwork for the cover of this album. It’s completely abstract, and doesn’t even give you the chance to sit there and make your final decision on what you think the cd will sound like. Let’s pop this bad boy in and give it a listen. What can be said about This Providence’s cd Who Are You Now, that can’t be said about life? It is beautiful and majestic. I had only heard a few songs from This Providence before but never had the chance to listen to a full length, but now that I have, I’m angry with myself that I hadn’t gotten it before!
